Volunteer with CANRA

Canadian Entry-to-Practice Examinations are here… we need you!

The Canadian Alliance of Naturopathic Regulatory Authorities (CANRA) is entering an exciting new chapter in support of the regulation of the Naturopathic profession across the country. The CANRA QE (Qualifying Examinations) are collectively the new national Entry-to-Practice Examinations launching in the Fall of 2026, creating a singular pathway to registration/licensure at entry-to-practice in all CANRA member jurisdictions in Canada. These examinations rely on the knowledge, judgement and generosity of Naturopathic Doctors from across Canada.

Why Volunteer

  • Strengthen public protection. Your expertise helps ensure that every newly registered Naturopathic Doctor meets a consistent, defensible national standard.

  • Shape the profession's future. Volunteers play a direct role in how the next generation of practitioners is assessed and prepared for practice.

  • Grow professionally. Serving on a national examination program builds valuable experience in assessment, psychometrics, and regulatory best practice.

  • Join a national network. Connect with colleagues and regulators from across Canada working toward a shared goal.

Volunteer Roles

Examiners are a key part of the Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Examiners receive comprehensive training and are reimbursed for their travel expenses as well as receiving a token of appreciation for their time.  Exams are usually one day with arrival the day before required for training and standardization exercises.  If you value short-term commitment, the opportunity to connect with peers and support the future of the profession, this is a great opportunity.

Item-Writers support the examinations with ongoing item development aligned to the blueprint and national competency profile.  Item Writers receive in-depth training to support their item writing efforts and meetings occur both in person and virtually depending on the types of items being generated.  Some of this work is in a group setting and some is autonomous. You are compensated for any required travel expenses and receive a token of appreciation for your item development. This is a longer-term commitment, but with great flexibility.  If you have a strong attention to detail, love digging into source and reference material to support your work, this is a great opportunity to contribute.

The Examinations Oversight Committee (EOC) is central to the CANRA QE. Members are appointed by the CANRA Board to three-year terms and serve as the examination’s key subject matter experts (SMEs). The EOC provides the final review of examination items and overall construction, ensuring alignment with the blueprint, and the Chief Examiner and Deputy Chief Examiner(s) are drawn from among its members. You are available to attend the OSCE and have virtual availability for meetings with a time commitment that varies based on examination needs. Committee members receive an honorarium for their meeting time and are reimbursed for expenses. You are excited about the new National exams and are keen to bring your passion to the table.
